Silhouettes, projections and making slides out of acetate:

To develop my wire flowers further I decided to try projecting them as silhouettes onto a white surface using a light projector, I tried a variety of different compositions, some using all of my flowers and some with just one or two, I also tried projecting onto surfaces with different levels, however I found that I preferred the result of a flat surface much more as when using styrofoam boards to provide layers I found that the image appeared choppy, disconnected and broke up the image in a way the I believe was distracting and disorientating. However, when using I white paper drop for the background it provided a whole intact image which I believe was much cleaner and appealing to look at.

Looking at the results of my first attempts I believe that forms created seem quite organic, like something you would see when looking through a microscope, I also experimented with different levels of focus having blurred lines in the background and focused, sharper lines in the foreground, I really liked this and think that it provides a nice contrast within the image but I believe that having them be overly blurred takes away from the image and puts a barrier between the image and the viewer, however my favourite image taken from my initial experiment is where I have all of my flowers gathered towards the right side of the image, to me this images feel friendly and playful but the long sections of the petals shooting off in various directions and overlapping each other provide a hint of chaos to the image, like a group of school children getting ready for a prank, I think that this is in direct contrast to my image using only one flower which I believe invokes a feeling of melancholy and loneliness.

While experimenting with videos as well as pictures I found that the tone of my projections completely changed when using my flowers in a video. I took two videos slowly moving my flowers into the projection while slightly waving them and in both instances the result felt fun, bubbly and child like, as if they were telling a story to an old friend, it seemed joyful and invoked a feeling of playfulness.

Due to the age of the projector that I used there were some marks and colour changes on the actual bulb of the projector that can be seen in my final images, when looking at these additions to my images I believe that this discolouration caused my images to feel old and vintage, photos that were taken years ago and have been withered by time, like something you would find tucked away in a box in your attic, looking at my images and thinking about them further they reminded me of old Victorian glass slides which inspired me to try and create my own slides out of acetate.
