Comparison of materials used in buildings:

The Nottingham contemporary was built using reinforced concrete, this allows for a more adventurous structure including overhangs that couldn't have been done using older, traditional methods and materials. The concrete being reinforced with metal means that the structure can be built taller without any risk of the weight causing it to collapse, and the lace patterns on the outside of the building were created with pre cast concrete.

However, Nottingham Castle is mainly built out of sandstone. Sandstone is a strong and durable stone which means that it will last against weathering and vandalism, however, the colour of the stone is susceptible to change over time. Due to sand stone being a heavier material the structure will not be able to be built as tall as when using reinforced concrete due to the base of the structure not being able to bear the added weight.
