Artist research: Alexander Calder
'Arc of petals' is a hanging sculpture created by Calder inn 1941 is a piece made out of sheet metal wire and paint. I believe that the smaller pieces are shaped in a way that mimics leaves and flowers and the overall curve and shape of the sculpture is reminiscent of of a falling leaf, the wire holding the piece together acts as the veins of a leaf. When looking at this piece it feels cold and harsh, the black and grey tones of the metals create a void and clinical atmosphere within the piece. However, in contrast to this I think that the wire that twists and flows throughout the piece provides a feeling of connection, this could be a representation of how you are always able to find connections and relationships around you.
When looking at Calders piece 'Sculpture of air' I am instantly reminded of a whirlwind. The way that the wire curves and twists is smooth and creates a sense of motion within the piece which I believe adds to light and airy effect that this sculpture creates. I think that the black ends of each piece of wire create a clear focal point for the viewer and provides a contrast in tone to the rest of the piece. To me this sculpture seems minimalist and bare, causing the piece to seem raw and almost unfinished which I believe allows the viewer to better connect to this work as the is no flamboyance or hidden message. It is upfront and truthful.
