Terri Kern:

This piece has been made using underglaze to create a beautiful and vibrant scene. The phoenix has its wings spread wide as if it has just risen from the fire and is soaring into the nights sky, I think that this invokes a feeling of power and hope as if the phoenix knows no limits. I believe that this then allows the viewer to feel strong and empowered, as if they can overcome anything. I love the use of colour within this image, it's bold and bright and I believe that this adds to the hopeful atmosphere of the piece. The colours seem to draw you in acting as a beacon. I really enjoy the style of the drawings in this work. the lines are smooth and seem to flow in an almost hypnotic way, it seems dream like and cartoonish which I believe adds an enjoyable and fun sensation to the work.

This piece again depicts and animal, however, it is a fox this time instead of a phoenix. This is an interesting contrast to the previous piece as I believe that the choice of a fox invokes a much more grounded atmosphere compared to the soaring bird. I think that this piece feels calm and almost meditative, the fox is running through an open field while making eye contact with the viewer as if inviting them to join. I think that the use of cool toned colours such as blue and earthy colours such as green allow the brighter orange of the fox to stand out nicely and be a clear focal point and subject of the piece. There is something freeing about this image and I think that this feeling allows the viewer to feel a sense of liberty and freedom.
