Kate wiles:
Kate wiles is an artist and tutor at Nottingham College and has spoken to us about curatorship. Wiles studied art for a foundation degree after A levels, Graduated with a BA from Tree university in the late 90's and spent a year at the Royal academy being tutored and mentored by Tracy emmen.
Wiles has worked with many artists such as Marc quit on 'Blood head' and Gilbert and George on 'The dirty words pictured',and has had a role with curating for these exhibitions. Using this experience Wiles was able to buy a building and turn it into a gallery space to exhibit her course mates work once she moved back to Nottingham, and is still in touch with artists such as 'Matt Jordan' to this day.
During this time Wiles put on many shows and exhibitions such as 'Little wolf parade' which was an evening of performance art, and when wiles graduated in 2001 she was able to use all of her experience with curating to work for 'Castle fine Art' running a retail gallery.
Some of the Key points that Wiles wanted us to consider when thinking of curatorship are:
- The scale of the exhibitions
- The length of the exhibitions (Whether they are temporary or permanent)
- The mediums that have been used
- The location
- Transportation
- Collaboration
- The values of pieces
- Promotion
- Public engagement
- Securement of funding
Curatorship is something that I find very interesting and the main point that I took away from this lecture is that experience will be the most helpful tool to have. Whether you are volunteering or working in a gallery or exhibition space, as long as you are there and engaging then you will also be learning and gaining experience which will be very helpful later on in your career.
