Contemporary: Alan Webber:

I went to see Alan Webbers exhibition 'My Order' at the Contemporary. Webber, who was born in Brazil is a multi disciplinary artists who works across a range of mediums such as assemblage, installation sculpture and photography.

This exhibition took place over two spaces, gallery 1 and 2, gallery one was spacious with works mounted on the wall and some on the floor. There was a mixture of photography, collage, sculpture and video. The second space held a large rope installation. Bothe areas were large and bright, the first seeming more spacious due to the lack of work being placed in the middle of the area, gallery 2 felt slight more cramped as the work took up the majority of the space and the viewer needed to walk around it.

My favourite piece from this exhibition is the hanging installation, this piece features parts of a motorbike such as the seat, helmet and even a delivery bag being highly bound by the rope. When looking at this piece I am reminded of a spiders web, of being trapped and suffocated. Webber, who was once a food delivery driver while becoming an artist and I believe that there are parallels between the way in which a spider kills its prey and the way in which food delivery drivers are often exploited by larger companies. I believe that there is a melancholy feeling throughout this piece as though the objects know what is happening to them and are trying to break free but never will. I think that the way the installation utilises the space is effective as each object is hung at a different level and are spaced out from each other, I believe that this allows the overall composition of the work to be interesting as there is a new object in every section. The colour of the majority of the rope is dark with some lighter rope providing a contrast, I believe that this darker colour adds to the sad and foreboding atmosphere of the piece.
