Djanogly: Grayson Perry

Grayso Perrys exhibition 'Man hours' displayed at the Djanogly gallery consisting of three large, bright spaces and most of the work hanging on the walls. The walls of the spaces were a bright white which not only provided a neutral background for all of the works but also allowed the works to stand out and draw attention. Each space was large and airy, there was lots of room to move around and it felt spacious and free.

One of my favourite pieces is a black and white print consisting of two humanoid rats and a frog dressed in clothes. To me this piece feels cartoonish and funny, there is a slight ridiculousness and odd atmosphere. They seem to be standing outside of a circus tent and the plain cloths that they wear indicate that they could be performers, with the frog holding a ringmasters hat. I believe that they are resting after a show and I think that this creates a sense of exhaustion within the image, while the view of the tent adds a fantastical element.

Another one of my favourite pieces is a print depicting a variety of animals dancing on a cliff edge. this print is black and white which I think allows a nice contrast between the lighter and darker areas, and also causes the shadows to be become more prominent causing depth within the work. I think that the starry background creates a whimsical and magical atmosphere within the image, the cat playing the violin is not only fantastical but also makes it seem as if the others that are dancing are in some kind of trance because of the music. I believe that there are some parallels to the story of the pied piper and overall this image is dreamlike and whacky. I think that the smiling face of the cat is fun and inviting and I believe that it draws the viewer in, as if it is inviting the viewer to dance.
