presentation evaluation:

For the curatorship task I was given the portfolio of one of my course mates, I think had too create a presentation for how I would curate their work in an exhibition. I needed to think about which works go together and why. To begin with I looked at their portfolio as a whole  and separated the work into groups considering medium and colour scheme. I mainly  focused on colour scheme and whether the pieces would compliment each other or not, once I had them all in main groups I decided to try and add in work that would provide a contrast, whether in medium or colour scheme but still made sure that they related in some way. This was the section of the task that I found the easiest as the majority of their work focus on the portrayal of light, this meant that there was a connection throughout the entirety of their work and allowed me to be quite flexible with my picks.

I think that adding a piece of work to a group of works to provide contrast was one of my most successful choices, it prevented the exhibition from becoming boring and repetitive. I also believe that the way in which I composed the work was well thought out and aesthetically pleasing. I tried to avoid going down the route of endless triptychs as I though that this could also become repetitive, and I think that this was a successful decision and allows the viewer to have something new and different to look at as they walk around.

I then began to think about where I would exhibit their work, this included research such as looking at previous exhibitions in galleries such as nottingham contemporary, jnogly and the Tate Modern. I found that these were all very traditional and conventional exhibition spaces with classic white walls and brightly lit rooms. I debated whether or not to have their work exhibited outside, in a forest but quickly came to the conclusion that a larger and denser area would swallow and take away from their work. In the end I settled on a small well lit room with classic white walls as to allow the work to stand out. when thinking about this I chose to exhibit their final piece, a reliquary, in a separate dark room with a spotlight directly on it to show hi light the religious connotations of the piece. I found this section of the task much harder than the first, and in hindsight I wish that I had spoken to the artist to get their own opinion on where they felt their work could be displayed. I believe that this was one on the mistakes I made during this talk and next time I will be sure to converse more with the artist to make sure that the curatorship process is collaborative.

When thinking about what to name this exhibition in the beginning I was stuck. There was such a variety of work that I was struggling to come up with something that would link all of the piece together, this is when I came to the conclusion that the aspect and exploration of light was present within all of their works, and when I was asked this ta the end of my presentation I was able to name the exhibition 'An exploration of light'.

When it came to presenting I found myself very nervous, I struggle with public speaking and stage fright and any previous presentations that I have had to do have been pre recorded voice notes. I decided to present in person this time as a way to push and challenge myself and to prove that I could do it. One thing that helped me is that there were a reduced number of students who were watching me, and I knew then very well which relieved a lot of the stress for me. I believe that my presentation went very well, I was able to speak cohesively and clearly and I felt confident while doing it.

For my feedback, some students mentioned that I could have explored more exhibition venues and options and this is something that I mentioned previously. I agree that I could have thought more out of the box and found a more unconventional place to exhibit. I have since spoken to the artists about where they would have liked to see their work and they suggested somewhere small and intimate such as a chapel, and I believe that it would have helped my presentation had I had this conversation with them earlier.
