Dora Carrington:

When looking at this image I notice the chaotic nature of the painting, the red rooftops are too bright and clash with the pale yellow walls and green grass. The lines of the building are mostly straight, but lean at odd angles creating a peculiarity to the image. I think that this work is quirky and fun, the bright colours are dazzling and overwhelming, they seem to overstimulate and distract. In terms of composition this work is full, there is something new everywhere you look. The main building provides a solid structure to the work that invokes strength and continuity, the house looks old and familiar as if it has been standing there for years and seen families grow up there. Despite the chaos I find that there is something comforting about this piece, the water creates movement and reflections and the houses imperfections, such as the peeling paint and discoloured roof tiles allow the building to feel lived in, used and inviting.

When I look at this work I think that it is in complete contrast to the previous work the lines and textures that can be seen are smother and the sand dunes curve gently. I believe that this paired with the more bare and barren landscape invoke a serene atmosphere within the work and the light reflecting off the peaks of the dunes make them seem polished and glossy, allowing the work to seem almost pristine and put together. The green tones of the plants contrast the endless being dunes and create an aspect of life within the piece. I really love the contrast between the smoother hill sin the foreground of the work compared to the more jagged edges that can be seen of the mountain in the background. I think that this allows the mountain to seem wild and untamed, there is depth within this piece and the mountain seems big and looming creating an atmosphere of anticipation.
