Coastal visit:

I decided to document my trip down in Devon, the majority of these photos were taken from one hike that I did while I was there. I wanted to look at seascapes and explore the landscape, colours and tones of an area where the land meets the ocean. This hike was very nostalgic for me, this is a hike that I have done every year since I was little so while photographing the scenery it felt like I was going down memory lane. When I look at the images that I have taken I feel calm, the earthy greens and browns are grounding, the rippling blues of the sea are tranquil and seem to put me at ease and the rugged landscape seems rough but familiar at the same time. I think that there is something about being by the coast that is so relaxing and when I look at these images I feel at home.

 FMP evaluation: This FMP lasted 16 weeks and concludes the 2nd year of my Fine Arts Foundation Degree. To begin my project I started off with some photography of walks and hikes that I did while on holiday. The theme of this project was about recovery, this was a personal theme as last year I had come down very suddenly with an illness and have spend months recovering from it. I wanted this project to explore the themes of sickness, recovery, how these thing change and affect your every day life and the resilience and perseverance needed to get better.  Through a series of images I was able to document walks, hikes and meals that I would not have been able to do or eat a month before and I found this process empowering and liberating. Once I had the foundations I was able to start developing my project.  Final piece: As a final development for this project I was speaking to some of my course mates and one of them suggested the possibility of placing my cut outs outside. I really liked this idea and thought that it ties in well with my theme so I went into my back garden and placed the cut outs in different places such as against a stone wall and in a bush.  The first this I noticed while looking at my work outside is that I believe that this brought my work to life, it was as if everything fell into place and my work suddenly made complete sense while in an outside, natural environment. I think that having my pieces placed outside allowed the images to be tied back to the original photos of litter that I took at the very beginning of the project creating a nice cycle from start to finish.  When looking at my final images I believe that there is something quite comical about them, fake litter being placed outside masquerading as real litter.  Castle project: Foraging for the first step in my project I foraged a variety of materials from a local forest including leaves, sticks and berries. Most of it was dead and I avoided snapping off fresh leaves and aimed to take things that had already fallen off and were dead. I managed to get a good variety, however, because it is winter I found that almost everything was dead and brown. Originally, I wanted to create some flower crowns using my found materials, however due to them being dead and brittle I found that this wouldn't be possible and that I would have to use fresh flowers instead.
