First attempt at silhouette cyanotype:
For my final body of work I wanted the middle of my three wall hangings to be a silhouette of my own body. I wanted to do this to link my work more closely to my project theme, the images of liminal spaces on the other wall hangings would represent the surreal elements of the subconscious and dreams. These images showcase how out of place a person can feel in a dream and how confused they can feel when trying to recollect one. The silhouette would provide a more grounded aspect to the work, providing a physical connection for the viewer, the body would would link each piece together.
This first attempt was not successful at all, the silhouette was so faint that it can hardly be seen and I was wearing baggy clothes which makes the put-on look odd. The cyanotype mixture seemed to wash out very easily and with the final colour being a very pale blue and not the usual dark blue. I wonder if this is because the mixture I was using was quite old but I'm not too sure, there was also a discrepancy in the colour when I was painting the mixture on. I painted half and then left it to dry and painted the other section the next day, it was clear that they had been done at different times and this didn't change after washing. I'll be sure to mix some new solution before my next attempt to ensure I have the best chance at getting a successful silhouette.
I also think that my position was completely off, my head seemed to be too high up and went over the edge of the calico. I was laying on my back and I think that this created a static and unauthentic silhouette, I don't sleep on my back and I think that it would be more compelling to have an outline of myself in my natural sleeping position. I also think that I need to re think that clothes I wear, something that isn't as baggy so that the silhouette will have neater and more clear lines.
