Final piece:

As a final development for this project I was speaking to some of my course mates and one of them suggested the possibility of placing my cut outs outside. I really liked this idea and thought that it ties in well with my theme so I went into my back garden and placed the cut outs in different places such as against a stone wall and in a bush.

The first this I noticed while looking at my work outside is that I believe that this brought my work to life, it was as if everything fell into place and my work suddenly made complete sense while in an outside, natural environment. I think that having my pieces placed outside allowed the images to be tied back to the original photos of litter that I took at the very beginning of the project creating a nice cycle from start to finish.

When looking at my final images I believe that there is something quite comical about them, fake litter being placed outside masquerading as real litter. It's ironic in a way that is able to convey a real message about the environment and littering while still invoking an undertone of humour throughout the work. I think that by doing this and using cut outs of littered objects that would usually be ignored I have been able to bring attention and shed light on the issue.

I think that my favourite image out of the two is where my cut outs are placed in the bush. They seem to be scattered about carelessly, and I believe that the brighter, more artificial colours of some of them provide a striking contrast to the natural surroundings. There is an obvious clash between nature and mankind within my images which I believe to be provocative and challenging. The fake litter is misleading in a way that I think makes the viewer do a double take to check if what they have just seen is even real or not which I think perpetuates an atmosphere of subtle humour, mischief and confusion, as if someone is playing a prank on the viewer.

If I was to take this project farther I think that I would play into the performance and humorous aspect of my work. While discussing this with my course mates some suggested the possibility of of leaving these cut outs around town for strangers to find and record their reactions to my work. Or creating large scale versions and leaving them out in obscure places such as forests and fields as if they had materialised out of nowhere. However, I am pleased with my final images and believe that this has been a successful project.
