Artist research: Projections

Paul Chan:

Paul Chan is an American artist, writer and publisher born in 1973. In 2005 Paul Chan created seven large projections based on the biblical seven days of creation.

I have chose two images from his 'first light' installation, the first image depicts an urban landscape with telephone wire and street lights with dark silhouettes in contrast with the pale background believe that this scene gets more and more surreal as you look at it for a longer period of time as you start to notice the floating bus and debris in the background which I believe disrupts the image and causes a disconnect that draws the viewers attention. This piece feels almost dream like to me with a seemingly normal scenery and surroundings that has small, out of the ordinary situations that make you feel as if something isn't right. I think that the addition of the levitating bus elevates the piece to a new level and invokes a whimsical atmosphere within the piece.

The second projection depicts a more natural scene than the first with a large tree as the focal point of the image, I believe that this piece includes more fine detail than the first and you can see this when looking at the leaves of the tree, again the black silhouettes are in contrast to the pale background, to me this image feels a lot more natural than the first and seems far more grounded and down to earth. The small cars in the background create a mundane atmosphere for this piece as if it is a snapshot take of someones commute to work in the morning or a picture taken from someones bedroom window and I believe that this allows the viewer to relate and connect to the piece easily.

I really enjoy Paul Chans work and I would like to explore different types of projections and experiment with compositions in my future work.
