Yorkshire Sculpture Park:

For our 'tracing the land' project we went to Yorkshire sculpture park to conduct some research. I found that as well as the art that was being exhibited there the landscapes and nature that I saw and was surrounded by was incredibly inspiring.

Two of my favourite artists were Erwin Wurm and Leonardo Drew, I found Leonardos pieces to be chaotic and raw, with rough and jagged edges and lines, His piece 'number 360' feels like entering a tornado, it's a whirlwind of plywood and board, and I believe that invokes and angry and wrathful energy, the entire piece engulfs the whole room and when looking in any direction I could see a new section that I hadn't seen before. The most impressive part was the middle section with board stacked on top each other that reaches the ceiling, it's imposing, towers over the viewer and can't be ignored, however I found that viewing this piece from different perspectives seems to change the feeling and my reaction. When looking at this piece from below I felt like I was in the midst of it, I was surrounded by this roaring storm of emotion and frustration and I believe that it causes the viewer to have a much more visceral reaction. When looking at this piece from above I felt far more removed from the piece, I could see what was happening and I could see the chaos but I wasn't affected by it, it seemed more surreal. I also believe that the chapel that this piece was being displayed in provided a stark contrast to the piece, a chapel used for peace and prayer being take over by destruction.

When walking outside I saw three large sculptures depicting humanoid sausages, one gold one white and one black. The different colours used provided a contrast while also complimenting each other, I found this piece to be childlike and friendly, it invoked a bubbly and joyous feeling and I believe that the smoothed, curved lines and edges added to this feeling while providing an atmosphere of safety. It was fun and silly and I enjoyed the way that each sculpture was positioned so that they were facing each other as if having a convocation. I think that the setting and scenery of this piece was well thought out as these large, shiny,  metallic sculptures amongst the greenery and foliage added to the absurdity of the piece.

Overall, I loved these two pieces. One was thigh proofing and heavy while the other was light and fun and I found the trip as a whole to be a very helpful and fulfilling experience.
