Abstract and process art:

For an example of abstract art I chose a piece called 'Convergence' by Jackson Pollock which was created in 1952 and is oil on canvas, When looking at this piece it seems to be a flurry of bold colours and shapes that flow and mould together which I believe causes a sense of connection and strength throughout the image that binds the individual aspects together. I believe that this painting is a work of passion and emotion, the chaotic and messy splatters of paint across the canvas spec of an artists who wishes to convey what they feel in that very moment, I believe that this painting feels angry, as if it is lashing out against its surroundings. I think that the technique of layering the paint that has been use causes a sense of depth within the painting, draws the viewer in and allows the viewer to be surrounded by this chaotic whirlwind of colours and forms. I really enjoy this piece because when looking at the overall composition it seems as if the top layers of paint have been painted in a way that makes it look like spray paint to me and I find this modern twist combines with the traditional oil paint to provide a nice contrast with each other

For an example of process art I chose a piece called 'hand catching lead' by Richard Serra which consists of a video piece of lead falling in intervals and a hand attempting to catch each one, to me this piece feels very surreal and the repetitive nature of of the video makes it seem as if you are trapped in a time loop with no way to escape. throughout the entire piece I thought that it was very surreal, and I believe that the silence of the film adds to this odd and unusual atmosphere. The black and white tones provide a stark contrast to each other and I think that this aspect paired with the other components of the film invoke an atmosphere that's strange and peculiar and I believe that the black and white imagery and slightly fuzzy film allow this piece to feel dated and old, as if it has been dug up in a time capsule and is being viewed for the fist time in years. As the film goes on the subjects hands get progressively dirtier and he seems to miss the lead piece as they fall, his fingers just barely scraping them before grasping the air, I think that this provides the viewer a visual for his emotions and is symbolic of his frustration at failing to catch anything.
