Amateur and Professionalism:

For an example of a piece of professional art I chose 'The lovers' by Rene Magritte, who is a surrealist artist born in 1898 and is most well know for his depiction of familiar objects in places and situations, his work has gone on to influence pop art, minimalist art and conceptual art. When looking at this piece I can instantly see surrealist elements such as the cloths obscuring the subjects faces and I believe that this invokes an atmosphere of anonymity and secrecy, it slightly disconnects the viewer from the painting and the viewer may feel as isolated and detached, paired with the light and shadows this provides a sense of depth within the image especially in the cloths that are covering the subjects heads, I believe that these techniques provide a contrast to the isolated atmosphere and pulls the viewer in and allows the viewer to feel as if they are standing within the painting itself. I believe that the choice to obscure and hide the faces of the subjects is quite powerful, the viewer doesn't know who they are or their story however we can see and feel the love that they have for each other, they have overcome the obstacles  and even though the cloth continues to try and separate them they are locked in a loving embrace, this invokes an atmosphere of strength and longing and I believe that this really communicate to the viewer the power and impact of human love and will.

I chose a piece by Jon Pylypchuk as an example of an amateur piece of art, he makes the majority of his sculptures using materials such as scraps of wood, remnant fabric, felt, glitter and glue, this piece has been sewn together crudely in a patchwork technique with oddly angled peg legs and antlers. The piece comes across messy, however, I believe that there is a sweetness to it, like a children's toy. It's cute and soft and I think that this invokes an atmosphere of safety and friendliness, I believe that the choice to create characters in the form of animals adds to this as humans often have a special bond with animals and we feel the need to protects them. When looking at this piece as a whole and seeing how all the different elements fit together I think that the soft, gentle fabric paired with the rickety wooden legs and arms add a feeling of vulnerability to the piece causing the viewer to want to protect and care for the characters. I think that this feeling of affection is heightened by the smaller animals as they resemble children, they invoke a maternal or paternal instinct within the viewer and allow the piece to be sweet and playful. I believe that the composition of the piece and the way the sculptures have been positioned tells a story to the viewer, the larger one is infant of the smaller two and holding their hands, this could be a parent looking after their children or an older sibling defending their younger siblings and I believe that there are familial undertones throughout this piece invoking an atmosphere and feeling of familiarity and closeness.
