Cyanotypes:
I attempted cyanotypes for the first time as a development of my project, I chose two images and printed out a negative of version of my photos and placed them underneath water colour paper that had been coated light sensitive chemicals and then exposed underneath a UV light. I was very happy with the result that I got, when looking at my finished images the light and tones were shown in different shades of blue, I believe that the blue tones help to portray the light in more abstract way and allows the viewer to feel as if they are looking at an altered reality rather than something that is hyper realistic, however, because of the process that I'm using and the amount of time that it's been around I think that this invokes a feeling of authenticity and tradition within my pieces and the viewer is not only able to connect with my piece but is able to connect with the process as well.
I believe that all three of my attempts have been successful, when looking at my first image I think that the blue tones light up the sky in a way that I was not able to capture with just a picture, It is not one solid colour and I believe that the change in tones and hues seem to create what looks like a cloudy and stormy sky hanging over the houses and trees. I think that the light is within the image has a very different effect from the original photo, instead of harsh shadows and a quick flash of light I believe that there is something more subtle and enticing about the way the light is showcased in this image, it seems to slowly take over the photo starting from the top left hand corner and works it way down the image and enveloping the tree, it's alluring and it draws the reader in, it's soft and gentle which provides a stark contrasts to the dark and stormy background and sky.
For my second and third images, I believe that converting these photographs into cyanotypes has completely transformed my imaged, what was once dark and moody is now illuminated with light, the bright background and dark shadowy tree are in complete contrast with each other which allows the silhouette of the tree to truly stand out and capture the attention of the viewer. I think that the change in colour and tone due to the process of creating the cyanotype has allowed the images to feel utterly otherworldly, as if the viewer is seeing the plant life of an alien planet. I believe that the light in the background of each image has allowed the intricacy and detail of the tree to be shown more clearly and invokes an atmosphere of importance and dominance throughout the image as if the moon is creating a spotlight for the tree to show it off in all its glory. I think that the decision to split the original photo into two cyanotypes was successful as I am able to layer and play around with the composition of the images to find what works well and what does't and I think that as I take this forwards and develop more with cyanotypes I will work with layering and composition more.
