Artist research: William Henry Fox Talbot

William Henry Fox Talbot, born in 1800, was an English scientist and photographer known for inventing the salt paper and calotype processes, I have chosen two of his photographs to evaluate

The first photo features an open doorway with a broom leaning against the wall, when looking at this photo I believe that black and white colours provide a contrast to each other and allows the light in the image to be portrayed subtly, instead of harsh and bright rays of light the light seems to softly illuminate the image and slowly disappear into the darkness throughout the doorway. I think that the lone broom in the middle of the photo creates an atmosphere of loneliness and solitude within the image as if it had been abandoned, and I believe that this feeling is enhanced by the winding branches making their way up the front of the building as if the person sweeping had been fighting against the natural surroundings and finally gave up. I believe that the gaping darkness of the open doorway invokes an ominous atmosphere, and when looking at this paired with the old fashioned broom I was reminded witches hiding away I the woods in solitary cottages luring in unsuspecting victims.

The second photograph is also in black and white and I believe that this enhances the shadows that can be seen and causes them to be more prominent against the background and I believe that the wild plants and and branches climbing up the walls add a sense of freedom and defiance as if nature is fighting back and reclaiming the building and surroundings. I think that the three men act as the subjects for the image and that they add an element of humanity and life to the image, and I believe that the way that they are holding the ladder together conveys a connection and relationship between the two men to the viewer. However, think that the man standing to the side creates a disconnect within the image, he doesn't not seem to be actively participation with the other two and I think that this creates undertones of solitude in the photo that provides a contrast to to connection and camaraderie created by the other two men.
