bike photography:
As a development from my house hold item collection photography I decided to focus on my dads bike collection. I did this because not only was it easily accessible but my dad is a bike fanatic which means that he has a family extensive collection for my to use. another reason I have decided to focus on bike collections is because it's something that is enjoyed widely throughout my immediate and extended family and I believe that this will be a good way to tie the project to me on a more personal level and allow me to show aspect of my family life through these photos and images.
I have a mixture of darker and lighter images that I have taken, while taking the photos I was constantly adjusting the shutter speed and aperture to try and find what works best for me. While looking at all of the final images I have found myself leaning more towards the darker toned photos rather than the lighter ones. I believe that when comparing the dark and light images side by side the dark ones appear much more moody and atmospheric. There is something grungy and melancholic about them, like they have a story to tell and I think that this allows the images to seem intriguing, as if there are secrets to them that the viewer has yet to discover.
I began by taking far away shots of the bikes and quickly found that this wasn't giving me the desired result, they amateur and messy. The compositions didn't seem thought out and I believe that this lowered the quality of my images, so I decided on taking up close photographs instead. I believe that by doing this I was able to capture some really dynamic images that manage to showcase much more detail. When looking at my images I think that the close up shots appear far more professional and clean, the angles that have been used allow the images to portray the bikes in different ways and I believe that each photo brings something new and interesting for the viewer to see.
My three favourite images are the first, second and last photographs, all three are up close shots. when looking at the first image I really like the mud that has been splattered all over the cogs and frame. I believe that this invokes a very human and down to earth atmosphere within the image, it's dirty and raw but I think that this detail allows the viewer to have an insight on the bike owners life, it tells a story. It shows that the bike is being used and loved and that the owner enjoys their hobbies, but that the owner must also be a busy individual as they haven't has time to clean the mud off. when looking at this image I believe that I feels human, the viewer is able to make a connection to the image due to the ordinary aspects that are shown and they might even see aspects of their own life reflected beck to them.
when looking at the second and last image what caught my eye immediately about them both was the tires and wheels cutting across the photos. They instantly reminded me of planetary rings, especially when the bike is suspended in the air, which I believe allowed these two images to have an atmosphere of mystery and grandeur. Both of these images showcase bright colours that provide a good contrast and I believe that the odd angles provide an air of peculiarity to the images.
