Yeong Deok Seo

I have chosen two Sculptures by artist Yeong desk Set that relate to and have inspired my own work. the pieces that I have chosen are made of bicycle chains that have been tightly wrapped together to create humanoid forms.

The first sculpture depicts a human torso and head tilted towards the sky with its arms stretching backwards. I believe that there is an atmosphere of despair within this piece, as if the figure is crying out and looking to the heavens for help. I think that the generic features of the sculpture allows different types of viewers to be able to relate to and connect to this piece, as they are able to see themselves within the features. I think that the broken forearms of the piece add to the atmosphere of sadness and despair, the end of the arms are jagged and rough as if they have been forcibly broken off, and I believe that this imagery invokes a feeling of pain and restriction that may cause the viewer to feel confined themselves as the sculptors bodily autonomy is ripped away. I believe that the surroundings and lighting that have been used when displaying this place have allowed the depth and dimension to truly stand out. The light catches on the metal and accentuates the curves of the body and the details of the chains.

The second image depicts fours sculptures made from the same material being displayed at different angles. Again, parts of these forms appear to have been ripped off leaving violent and jagged edges, and exposing the inside of the sculpture. The bicycle chains that have been used allow the light to shine through which provides a nice contrast to the darker tones of the metal, and allows the light to catch on the shiny surface of the metal and draws the eye to the smaller details. When looking at these pieces I believe that the broken bodies invoke a feeling of tragedy, and the hollow insides of the sculpture give off a feeling of emptiness. When looking inside these sculptures and seeing nothing but emptiness I think that the viewer could feel a sense of sorrow for these forms as they are humanoid but not yet human. I also this that there are undertones of violence and brutality within these pieces. Their limbs have been torn off and they are left abandoned with their broken bodies and I believe that these sculptures are a commentary on the violence that humans can cause to one and other.
