Johnny White:
Johnny White is a sculptor who has created a variety of pieces, kinetic and non kinetic, that feature cogs and bicycles which I believe relate to my current project.
the first piece is called 'human machine' and was displayed at the Deer shed festival in 2013, the sculptor consists of ice cogs moving and being melted by fire. To me, this piece is a commentary of the fleeting nature of human life. It doesn't last forever and neither does this sculpture, slowly the heat reduces the cogs to nothing. I think that this sculpture is also an exploration of interconnectedness and the way in which things can work together to serve a large purpose, the cogs slot together and allow each other to move around. This is a performance piece and I believe that doing it at night has allowed this piece to have an effective impact on the viewer. The fire is luminous and brightly lights up the area allowing for a contrast between the dark surroundings and the blinding fire. I really love the contrast between more natural properties of the ice and the industrial metal forming the outer structure, to me, there is a sense of freedom to this piece. The inner workings of the artificial body are breaking free from their cage.
the second sculptor is called 'Cycling to work', and depicts a bicycle resembling a Penny Farthing being ridden by a man with a mechanical lower half and legs. I believe that this is an odd and silly piece, and has surrealist undertones. It's almost cartoonish the way that the body of the man transitions into these spindly legs, and I think that the strange and outlandish proportions of the bicycle only add to this atmosphere. When looking at this piece I believe that the white colour and tones provide a contrast to the natural setting and surroundings. The white tones allow the sun to easily cast light and shadows onto it increasing the perception of depth within this piece and allowing the finer details to become more noticeable. Overall, I believe this to be a fun and friendly piece that uses its cartoonish charm to invite the reader in.
