Rachel Carter is a full time professional artist who has worked on many projects and is currently working on her newest named 'The Pilgrim Women'. She went back to study at college as a parent and went to university as a mother of two studying applied art.
During our lecture Carter made some valid points on how to achieve and be successful as a professional artist, such as networking, applying for funding, being cost effective and seeking advice from other artists during projects. Seeking advice and guidance from others was something that I particularly took away from this lecture as I believe that you should never be too proud to accept help when needed and there is always going to be someone with more expertise about a certain technique or area of art. Carter told us about a project that she was working on where nothing she tried was working until she sought out help from university lecturers who then recommended an art company she could speak to. Through this she was able to find a solution to her problems and work through them to create an amazing piece.
Carter also emphasised the importance of communication, not only to connect and network with other artists but to have conversations with your customers as well so that they understand wether things will work out correctly. I believe that proper communication with customers is something that's very important as being open and honest not only make you look more professional, but also emphasises your good character and you are more likely to have a positive relationship.
when looking to exhibit Carter pointed out that it does cost money to enter exhibitions so she suggested applying for funds through websites such as 'Arts Council' or grants from your local council. In the spirit of being resourceful Carter also suggested working with your local communities to do trail runs as a cheaper way of exhibiting. She also advised doing research about different exhibitions to figure out where you will be most successful.
Towards the end of the lecture Carter spoke about the importance of always growing and changing as an artists, She emphasised learning new skills and techniques and continuing to experiment and push yourself in new areas and with new materials. One thing that she mentioned that I found to be helpful was doing artist research to figure out what kind of artist you want to be and what area you might want to go into.
