To begin developing my ideas, taking my project forward from the documentation of of found litter I began creating a collage made from old environmental magazines such as bbc gardening and bbc autumn watch. I liked the idea of a collage as I could layer things continuously on top of each other to be reminiscent of things like piles of litter and land fills. I decided to reuse old ones that were going to be thrown away instead of buying new one so that the entirety of my project including materials is more eco friendly. I also decided to include things like old receipts within my collage as a way to represent the over consumption of society.
As a base for the collage I started with more plain, basic images of flowers, leaves and landscapes and I then began to layer on images of animals and important headlines that I found in the magazine. I did this so that the animals and headlines would stand out the most and be the first thing that viewer would see. Since nature and the environment is what my project is all about I wanted to represent the creatures that suffer the most from our carelessness and have them at the forefront of my collage.
when looking at the finished first development I couldn't help but notice that the colours were very brown and dark and I struggled to find any proper sense of depth within my work, and because of this I found that piece felt too flat and anticlimactic. To remedy this I decided to use oil pastels onto of my collage.
I used the oil pastels to outline different areas and colour in spaces that I thought could use brightening up, and to take the statement of my work further I used a red oil pastel and crossed out the eyes and cut the necks of each animal that can be seen in a crude manner. I wanted this to be very on the nose, obvious, and have some shock factor to it. I wanted the viewer to feel confronted and be forced to think about their own actions and wether they have contributed to the problem, which I believe that I have done. I really like the finished piece, I think the work tricks the viewer with the initial bright colours by seemingly being innocent and fun. Then once you look closer you realise it's not what you thought and are confronted with darker imagery.
To take this project further I was thinking of perhaps creating something more 3D and sculptural out of the littler that I find.
