Artist research: Environmental artists

Terry Evans:

Terry Evans is a photographer that grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. A lot of her work centres around environmental activism, and her photography mostly involves prairies since 1978.

Evans piece 'The South Pasture' February to May 2022 is a wonderful pixelated photomontage of a mixture of different images used in a way to create a landscape. The colours are a variety of beige and brown with only a splash of green in the far distance which I think creates a desolate atmosphere to the overall work. I believe that the close up shots of the dead grass and dirt are powerful as they highlight the state of the earth, barren and dry, almost as if it is devoid of life. However, I think that there is still beauty in it, the delicate patterns and faded colours of the leaves and grass paired with add a feeling of hope that life could flourish there once again.

Evans piece 'Bur Oak with Roots' January 2020, is another photomontage made up of a selection of tree branches to create an image of a tree and its roots. I really like this piece and I believe that the way the different snapshots of images have been put together to create these winding, twisting patterns is alluring and enticing, and I believe that they display similarities to the human nervous system which allows the reader to feel a connection to the piece and see a reflection of their own humanity whiten the work. I think that the inverted colours of the roots immediately draw the eye. It's a stark contrast to the tree above and I think that the bright white acts like a beacon that draws the viewer in, and the more you look the more hypnotic it gets. When looking at this work as a whole I believe that it is reminiscent of the tree of life within Norse mythology and the Tree of life within Christianity. I think this is because of the semi visible book that can be seen at the very bottom of the piece, it's dark and can barely be seen which I think adds a layer of mystery and intrigue to the work.
