Rachel Whitereds piece 'Ghost', created in 1990 is a plaster cast of a victorian living room. This is a large piece of work and features an inverted version of a living room, including the sooty fireplace. When looking at this piece I think that the slightly stained white of the plaster age the piece, it makes it seem old as if it has been standing there for years and I believe that this adds a feeling of authenticity to the work. I think that the white tones of the plaster create an odd, ghostly atmosphere and the lack of any other real colour make it seem as if the viewer is looking at an old, forgotten memory or the after image of something that was once there. this piece feels cold and uninviting and I believe that this makes the viewer feel as if they are an outsider looking in, never allowed to enter.
As opposed to more traditional sculpture that may have used stone Whitereds has used plaster that has been reinforced with a steel frame. This allows the work to be more lightweight and easier to move and the steel sheets reinforce and strengthen the plaster to so it is more durable and not as susceptible to breaking as it would have been without the steel.
'Angel' by Michelangelo is a statue depicting an angel bent down on one knee holding a pillar. When looking at this piece I can Immediately see the intricate detail within the work that allows the piece to look so life like, the facial expression is soft and inviting and the curls of hair create a youthful image. I think that the way the cloth falls and drapes across the bent knee is so realistic which I believe invokes a feeling of kin ship with the viewer and the piece. It is such a real and human thing for your clothes to fold and bunch up as you crouch down that the viewer is able to see themselves reflected within the work. I believe that the cold grey and white tones allow the piece to feel polished and important, the surface is smooth and finished which indicates that this is a serious piece of work and not something to be discarded.
This sculpture has been made using marble which is a traditional choice for a sculpture of that time. I is strong, durable and will be able to last longer against weathering compared to other softer materials. Marble is easier to carve into as opposed to harder materials allowing for a quicker finished product.
