Artists research: Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp

while photographing my own 'Fountain' New York bagel bag I was inspired by Andy Warhols 'Campbells soup cans' and Marcel Duchamps 'Ready Made'.

When looking at Warhols 'Campbells soup cans' I think that this piece is simplistic but elegant. the bold red is a stark contrast to the white background and allows the image of the can to be a powerful and obvious focal point that draws the eye and distinguishes itself. I love the repeat pattern of the can with the small change of the flavours in each image, I think that it's fun and it seems lift the mood of the prints as if it's an inside joke between the artist and viewer. I believe that the finer lines and marks within the prints allows that piece to have more delicate aspects to it and I think that this created an undertone of fragility to the piece that contrasts the main theme of consumerism.

when looking at Duchamps 'Fountain' is a ready made sculpture that he displayed as fine art. When looking at this piece I believe that not only the urinal but also the situation and response to this piece is comical. I think that this piece is a statement and a way to push back and challenge what people believe is art and what they don't. The sculpture is a simple ready made urinal placed on a plinth with duchamps signed with a pseudonym 'R.Mutt'. The writing is black and stands out against the porcelain and the shape of the urinal allows shadows to be cast against the back of it both of which draw the eye. I believe that backlash that Duchamp gained from this piece is what makes it really interesting and it only further proves his point that people believe they know better that the artists themselves
