While creating my own own collages I was inspired by DaDa collages, in particular Hannah Hochs work. When looking at Hochs Collage 'Ohne titel' made in 1930. I immediately notice the bright and bold red background. I think that this grabs the viewers attention straight away and is in direct contrast to the paler, more subdued colours that have been layered on top. The subject of this collage seems to be a woman made up of two different halves that are slightly disproportionate to each other, to me, I think that it has some reminiscence to Frankensteins monster in the way that Koch has used the body parts of different women to create a full figure. And I believe that this creates an unsettling atmosphere within the piece. the subject seems to be standing at the top in an almost crucifixion pose, as if she is being put on display and sacrificed to the Gods. I also think that there are parallels to virginal sacrifices seen in ancient Rome and Greece. I think that this creates a religious undertone to the piece, and paired with the blood red background I think that this invokes an apocalyptic atmosphere as if the viewer is witnessing a blood sacrifice.

Collage II, made in 1925 consist of a more abstract form paired with bright colours. When looking at this piece I believe that it is reminiscent of Art Deco architecture and the straight lines and cuts make it feel as it is a jigsaw that has been put together incorrectly. The layering of different paper and colours allow there to be depth within the piece and I think that checkered mesh-like background create this illusion of there being even more space behind the main collage even though it is a 2D piece, and the paper piece seem to climb up the mesh like vines or flowers. I think that there is a good contrast between light, bright and dark colours that keep the work and composition interesting. and the sections of paper that seem to have drawings on them create a bubbly and fun atmosphere throughout the piece, as if they children drawings that have been used. coming back to my point about my belief that there is inspiration derived from Art Deco architecture within this work I believe that this adds a contrasting air of elegance to the piece and I think that the usage of black, white and red sections of straight cut paper allow these parts of the collage to feel sleek and chic.
