Artists research: Meredyth Sparks and Matt Lipps

'Roxy', 2008 by Meredyth Sparks. This piece is constructed out of 27 separate pieces and features a selection of different women in varied positions ranging from fully clothed to almost nude. The colour scheme seems to be darker with small splashes of paler colours which I think contrast each other well. I think that the way the this has been composed allows there to be depth and layers within the work, as if the women are jumping out at the viewer and trying to break free of the work itself. The women all seem to be done up and have full glam makeup on, they all seem to be staring at the camera either straight faced or with half lidded eye. I think that this invokes a sultry and seductive atmosphere within the piece, however, to me to seems as if these women are being put on display and exhibited as objects and items rather that humans. I think that with this view point looking at the work for a second time gives the viewer a different impression. The sultry gazes begin to morph into hardened stares, as if they are judging the viewer for daring to look at them. Overall, I believe that this piece is striking and thought provoking. The viewer is confronted with how society views women and are forced to reflect on their own thoughts as well.

'Untitled' 2010 by Matt Lipps. These two images seem to be photographs of a two long collages that have been split into two triptychs. They both contain a multitude of pop culture and art references, however they seem to shift from a black, white and grey tone to a warmer colour scheme of oranges and reds. I really like this aspect of the piece, I think that it not only provides a contrast within the work but it allows the piece to look as if it is coming alive. The last three images remind me of a theatrical back drop, and the more I look at this piece the more I am reminded of the 'wizard of Oz'. And I begin to see the parallels between the art piece going from black and white to orange and red, and the movie going from black and white to technicolour. It's weird and wonderful and I believe that this allows the viewer to feel as if they have stepped into a fantasy world and about to embark on a new adventure.
