Project proposal: The power of nature - BA Final year

For this project I want to focus and explore the power of nature and the world around me. I want to use a variety of mediums to create a body of work the explores the beauty, strength and magic of the natural world. I would also like to explore areas of folklore, possibly Irish mythology, as my mothers side originates in Ireland and I believe that this will create an additional personal aspect to the project. I plan to use photography as a base and starting point for this project, I believe that photography is a versatile medium the will allow me to continue to build and develop the project with ease. I wish to explore different different photography processes such and film and perfect processes such as Cyanotypes, I would also like to try different forms of printing and develop my skill set.

To begin with my research I think that the best course of action would be to travel to local and accessible areas of nature such as sherwood forest and Skylarks nature reserve. These places should provide me with some good photographs and allow me to gather some materials to either use for printing and mark making, or to keep for further inspiration. I would like to research more on Irish mythology and folklore so that I can implement these symbols and ideologies to create an intriguing and mystical body of work. as the project develops I would like to explore some areas and landscapes that are not as local such as the landscape and caves of Derbyshire, I believe that this would provide me with a substantial and varying set of photographs and documentation as well as allow me to personally experience the spectacular and remarkable nature around me.

For the initial artists that I wanted to looks at, Richard Long stands out as relating to my project the most. his work is heavily based around nature and landscape and he has travelled across the globe to create his art pieces. Andy Goldsworthy is another prominent artist that bases the majority of his work around the natural world

For my time plan, I wish to utilise my time efficiently and effectively. I have used the first day back to create my project proposal and will use the first two weeks of the academic year to focus solely on research of artists, materials and processes. After the group review on the 5th I will review and acknowledge the feedback from my peers and tutors and evaluate my project and work, and implement they're suggestion and advice. I plan to then use the rest of the month to focus on gathering my photography base and developing the initial stages of my physical work. I will continue to critically analyse and evaluate my work every day to keep on top of things and keep schedule. I will use Monday mornings to create and develop physical work while using the afternoons to annotate the work of the day. After the research and development exhibition I will use the rest of my time to perfecting my finished piece and writing an evaluation. I will have to carefully balance my time between my studio practice and the critical studies section of my work.

To evaluate and record my project as a whole I will keep my blog updated with posts including, photography documentation, critical analysis, peer reviews and one on one tutorials. I will make sure to record any feedback that I am given throughout this project and include my own thoughts, feelings and opinions. I will make sure to publish these bold posts regularly.
