Project evaluation: The castle project is our second project of the year, we are working with Nottingham castle to put on an exhibition using VR headsets and we needed to create a piece in response to either a work in the castle or an aspect of the castle itself. I really enjoyed working with the castle last year so I went into it with a positive expectation, and I believe that the use of virtual reality is new and interesting and it will add a fresh, innovative aspect to the exhibition. To start off this project I chose to respond to a painting called 'Still life with frog and goldfinch' by Matthias Withoos, and as a starting point in my response I went out and foraged natural materials such as stickers and leaves. I wanted to lean into the still life aspect of the painting as I was greatly drawn to and inspired by the depiction and various plants within the painting. I thought that this would be a good place to start as it's a very clear and direct link to the painting. ...

Ceramic transfer prints: When finally using my ceramic prints I began by trying to put apply them onto a dry ceramic surface with no glaze on and quickly found out that they would not stick and kept falling off. I was very confused as I thought that the transfers were supposed to go underneath a glaze and I was worried that this would delay my project even further. However, after some trial and error I found that the prints would stick to a glazed surface and when I asked the technician about this he confirmed that the type of prints that I had ordered worked best when applied to a glossy surface. When looking at the outcome of these prints I can say that I am very pleased with them, the details and lines have turned out really nicely and the image is clear and neat.
Frogs and photoshop: I decided to use waterslide ceramic transfer prints to create neat detailed images of frogs on my ceramic pieces and to do this I needed to send images off to a company for them to be made. to create the images of the frogs I traced the outline of a selection of frogs from a book and then drew the details free hand using the original images from the book as a reference. I then transferred the image onto white paper and drew over it in a black sharpie so that the image had clear, bold lines. I used photoshop to remove the background so that only the black lines were visible and copy and pasted multiple images onto an A4 sheet in various sizes. I chose to use images of the frogs because it's a direct link to the original artwork. I like the images of the frogs, they are neat and clean and the black lines are clear and I think that it's good that I have a variety of different images and sizes as there will be something different to look at on the ceramic pi...
Experimenting with wire: Before using fishing wire to tie my pieces together I decided to try out using some normal wire first as I was unsure that the fishing wire would be secure after tying it. I used a copper coloured wire as I wanted there to be a contrast between the white clay pieces and the wire and I began to wrap the wire around my pieces. As soon as I started I noticed that the wire was tricky to manipulate and the loops and bends that I was trying to create looked messy and seemed amateur and I quickly decided that this would not be the best material to use and that I would stick to using the fishing wire instead.
Grayson Perry: When looking at this piece I believe that it is a political statement at heart, with ceramic prints of Margaret Thatchers face and a depiction of a girl and the stages of her growing up. The background colour is a pleasant sage green and I think that this allows the prints and the various statements to stand out clearly. I believe that this white glaze is complimentary to the green and also provides a clear contrast that bright, bold and draws the viewers attention. I think that the image of Margaret Thatcher is an obvious focal point is immediately draws attention and invokes a feeling of controversy while surrounded by phrases such as 'Eduction' and 'white man van'. This piece seems to make a point of Thatchers term as prime minister and the policies that she passed. When looking at this piece I think that it is much more illustrated than the previous piece, figures and faces have been have been created with delicate fine lines and showcase lots of de...
Matthew Richardson: When looking into ceramic transfer prints I came across an artist named Matthew Richardson, in this particular piece he has used a transfer print to create a small but detailed image of a Crocodile and prism, I think that this image provides a nice contrast to the the white tones of the ceramic surface and the image shows clear usage of shading which conveys depth and shadows. When looking at this image I believe that it as been placed neatly and central onto the ceramic piece which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also emphasises that it is the clear subject and focal point of the piece. Looking at the piece as a whole I really enjoy the odd shapes and rough edges, it's an interesting contrast to the careful details of the transfer print. I believe that the brown tones that can be seen around the edges of the piece allow it to seem older and weary, as if it is an old artefact that has just been dug up from the ground. The markings on the section at ...
A comparative analysis of the treatment of Female artists As a young female artists I am familiar with the struggles that women have faced to be recognised and successful within the art world, women have fought to be recognised as their own people and artists in their own right. I believe that it is interesting to look at this time period where women begin to assert themselves and yet face so much misogyny and so many limitations not only within their own movements but within wider society as well. I believe that it is important to continue to discuss and shed a light on these issues and the historic mistreatment of women so that we are able to combat it so that it may not happen again. I have chosen three movements to discuss, Dadaism, Surrealism and Constructivism. I have chosen Dadaism and Surrealism because I am particularly drawn to these movements, I find the anti establishment and anti art ideology of Dada fascinating and compelling. I also believe that the way in women became m...
